An original artwork created as tribute to the dozens of people that lost their lives in the untamed solitude that was Matiu Island.

This piece captures the dark past of an island that is today only known as a wildlife sanctuary and tourist destination. Few people know or acknowledge the incredibly sad history, let alone remember the names of the dozens of people sent there to die.

Throughout this artwork there are subtle references to the history of the island and the people who gave their last breath while being detained there. May they forever find the peace in death that eluded them in life.
