Te Whanganui-a-Tara

Some say “You can’t beat Wellington on a good day”

This playful piece represents a break from my typical style. I don’t know what you call it, maybe, minimalist illustration? Feel free to hit me up on Twitter and school me on the various styles illustration.

Some might question the name, but, like so much of my work it’s influenced and inspired by my little boy. Usually it goes something like this: We’re out for a walk, he stops and says “Wow, that looks cool! Take a photo pāpā”. Then he says something funny, insightful, or just totally random that sparks my imagination.

No doubt local whānau will recognise Te Whanganui-a-Tara and get the reference. Add a kākā, the Days Bay ferry and if you look close enough there’s even a plane approaching the airport. Perhaps the only local reference missing is the cake tin.

I really enjoyed making this piece and reckon I’ll continue to explore this minimalist style in future work.

Location

Te Ahumairangi Hill, north end near Wadestown looking out past Matiu Island towards Petone.

Te Ahumairangi Hill runs for 38 hectares through the green belt of Te Whanganui-a-Tara. It’s a tree-filled wilderness in and around the central city and one of the capital’s finest features, full of walking and biking tracks with amazing views over the city, the harbour and the Orongorongo Range.
